Shin splints is a “lay term” which refers to exercise induced leg pains. Our Musculoskeletal Podiatrist’s are expert at differentiating between the different causes of exercise induced leg pains that sufferers most commonly present with:

Medial tibial Stress Syndrome which is normally described as pain and tenderness along the inside of the lower leg which eases off with activity and worsens following rest.

Tibial Stress Fracture which can often develop as a result of untreated medial tibial stress syndrome and prevents sufferers being able to bear weight fully through the leg. There is usually local swelling and very specific pain and tenderness on the leg bone.

Both conditions are highly prevalent in runners and those who are at increased risk include: females, military personnel and individuals with extremely flat or high arched foot types.

Less common causes of exercise-induced leg pain include:

  • Popliteal Arterial Entrapment Syndrome
  • Biomechanical Overload Syndrome
  • Lumbar Radiculopathy
  • Compartment Syndrome

Our specialist podiatrists will perform a comprehensive Leg Pain Initial Consultation to identify the cause of your leg pain and develop an accurate diagnosis and treatment plan.
